How To Get Started Saving Money at Walgreens
Walgreens has a rewards program similar to CVS, except you do not need a loyalty card in order to take advantage of the deals. These rewards are called Register Rewards (RR) and are a Catalina coupon (like what prints out at the grocery store). They can only be used at Walgreens.
Each week, Walgreens produces a flier that comes as an insert in your newspaper or you can pick one up at the store. You can also view the flier at Walgreens.com. In the flier, they will list the Register Rewards for the week. They will look something like this:
Glade Deodorizers:
2/$5 Sale Price
$1 RR (good on future purchase)
2/$4 Final Price
If you notice above, the RR’s are good on future purchases. In other words, the $1 RR does not come off of the total above, but they are more like extra cash for your next visit.
Walgreens also has in-ad coupons in their fliers each week. In order to get the deal, you must tear out the coupon and give it to the cashier at checkout. These are over and above the regular deals in the flyer and sometimes make for some of the best deals.
There are also savings booklets that are usually right out front with the weekly flier OR at the pharmacy. These contain different coupons than what are in the weekly flier.
Walgreen Rules
- Walgreen’s does accept both a Walgreen’s coupon and a manufacturer coupon on the same product. Example:
Walgreens has an In ad Coupon for $.50 off Bounty Paper Towels. You have a $1 off Bounty manufacturer coupon. You can use both of these coupons on the same purchase.
- You cannot use an RR to purchase something from the same manufacturer and expect another RR to generate. In other words, if you receive an RR for a General Mills item, you cannot, in turn, use that RR for another General Mills product and expect another RR.
- You can use your RR’s to buy a different Register Reward Deal. This is what is called “rolling” your RR’s. The more you can use your RR’s to purchase other products (and roll them), the less money you use out of your own pocket!
- You cannot use more coupons or RR’s than you have products. Example:
You are purchasing (2) Pantene products, (1) Cheerios, (1) Gillette Deodorant.
You have the following coupons: (2) $1 off Pantene, (1) $.75 off Cheerios, (1) $1.50 off Gillette and (1) $2 RR.
With this scenario, you have (4) products and (5) coupons (the RR counts as a coupon). You will be required to add something else in order to use all of the coupons. These are generally called Fillers. Fillers are cheap items like a pencil, eraser, something of that sort.
- RR’s expire within 2 weeks (sometimes less). Make sure you take note of the expiration date! If you don’t use them, it’s like throwing away cash.
- Where there is a B1G1 deal, you can use two coupons on those products. Example:
Folgers coffee is B1G1 2/$6. You can use (2) Folgers coupons for this.
